About the position

The Cytologist plays a critical role in safeguarding diagnostic accuracy and supporting Cerba Lancet Kenya’s commitment to quality, patient safety, and ISO 15189 accreditation standards.

The position is responsible for the microscopic evaluation and reporting of gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology samples to detect precancerous, malignant, and infectious conditions. This includes performing Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) biopsy procedures, supporting Pap smear collections where required, and ensuring optimal specimen processing and slide quality.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, the role supports workflow oversight, Turnaround Time (TAT) performance, quality assurance programmes, and continuous improvement initiatives to protect accreditation scope and organizational standards.

Cerba Lancet Kenya is part of the Cerba Lancet Africa, which has several laboratories situated at different locations (including different locations in Kenya and East Africa) and the Cytologist may be requested to serve these locations within East Africa (including Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda & Kenya) according to the needs of the Company, while physically based in Nairobi.

Reports to: Consultant Anatomical Pathologist / Designated Department Head

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform screening and reporting of normal gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology samples
  • Conduct Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) biopsy procedures
  • Submit abnormal cases for Pathologist review and final reporting
  • Supervise and support specimen processing, staining, and slide preparation to ensure optimal quality
  • Monitor and improve Turnaround Time (TAT) performance
  • Participate in Internal and External Quality Assurance (EQA/ILC) programmes
  • Support compliance with ISO 15189 standards , regulatory, &  internal Quality Management Systems
  • Liaise with clinicians and internal departments to ensure timely service delivery
  • Assist in training and mentoring laboratory and phlebotomy staff
  • Assist when there is need in preparation and processing of cytology samples. This may include but is not limited to centrifuging, slide smear preparation from centrifuge pellet, cytospinning, staining, labelling of slides, dispatch of cytology cases etc
  • Sourcing and researching information on complicated and unusual cases to enlighten clinicians and to include in the cytology report.

Performance & Quality Indicators

  • Achieve ≥90% organizational Turnaround Time (TAT) target
  • ≥90% concordance score in cytology EQA/proficiency testing
  • Support 100% maintenance of ISO 15189 accreditation scope in cytology
  • Timely resolution of cytology-related service issues within defined QMS standards

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent
  • Master of Science (MSc) in Clinical Cytology or equivalent
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB)
  • Valid KMLTTB practicing license

Experience

  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in cytology and Fine Needle Aspirate biopsy
