Breast Cancer Awareness Month

2026-10-06

This Pink Month, WHO’s theme, “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” highlights the importance of timely diagnosis, care and support.

In Africa, approximately 225,600 new breast cancer cases and 100,100 deaths were estimated in 2024 - a reminder to turn awareness into action.

Know your risk and recognise changes. Increasing age, family history, inherited gene changes, obesity and alcohol use can increase risk. However, most women diagnosed have no known family history. Look out for a new lump, changes in breast shape, skin dimpling, nipple changes or unusual discharge. Most lumps are not cancer, but a new breast lump or change deserves a clinical assessment—even if painless.
