Foot-and-Mouth Disease Symptoms, Why Early Testing Matters

2026-05-20

Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is currently affecting parts of Eswatini has had led to increased veterinary control and vaccination campaigns and restrictions on livestock movement. It is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. It spreads rapidly through direct contact between animals, contaminated equipment, clothing, vehicles, and even through the air over short distances.

The most reliable diagnostic method is a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) laboratory test, which detects the virus quickly and accurately.

Prevention & Control:

  • Restrict animal movement during outbreaks
  • Disinfect equipment, vehicles, and clothing
  • Isolate suspected animals immediately
  • Report suspected cases to veterinary authorities
  • Conduct routine testing, especially PCR diagnostics

Prompt action enables measures such as advice, vaccination and biosecurity and implemented sooner. Early detection remains one of the most effective ways to protect individual farms, neighbouring communities and the national herd.
