Cytopathology and Anatomical Pathology

Behind the science at a cellular level, we can see the cellular changes or examine for diseases.

Cytopathology is the examination of single cells or small groups of cells from scrapings or aspiration of fluid or tissue under the microscope. A common cytology test is the cervical Pap smear.

Types of specimens used in Cytopathology

  • Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA): A needle is used to aspirate fluid or cells from a tissue mass.
  • Brush/Scraping: Cells are collected by brushing or scraping the surface of a body part.
  • Body Fluids: Urine, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, and other bodily fluids can be examined for cells.
  • Pap Smears: A common type of cytopathology used to screen for cervical cancer. P

Types of specimens used in Anatomical Pathology

  • Biopsies: Small tissue samples taken from a body part for examination.
  • Surgical Resections: Tissue removed during surgery, which may be an entire organ or part of an organ.
  • Autopsies: Examination of the entire body after death.
  • Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA)
  • Placenta / Fetus
