Clinical Interest

Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) is a hormone mainly produced by the ventricles of the heart in response to overstretching of cardiac muscle cells (myocytes).
It plays a key role in cardiovascular homeostasis by promoting natriuresis (excretion of sodium into the urine), diuresis (increased urine production) and vasodilation, thereby reducing blood volume and pressure.

BNP levels are particularly high in patients with heart failure, making BNP measurement an essential tool for diagnosing and assessing the severity of this condition. Elevated BNP levels correlate with increased ventricular pressure and volume overload, typical of heart failure.

Elevated BNP levels can help differentiate between cardiac causes of dyspnoea (breathlessness) and non-cardiac causes, such as lung disease.
