Clinical Interest

Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) assays are clinically significant for diagnosing and monitoring liver and bile duct diseases, among other conditions.

GGT is an enzyme found in high concentrations in the liver and can indicate liver damage or disease such as hepatitis (viral or alcoholic), Cirrhosis, primary or metastatic liver tumours steatosis or steatohepatitis.

GGT is particularly useful in diagnosing conditions affecting the bile ducts as cholestasis, biliary atresia or cholangitis.
GGT is a sensitive marker for chronic alcohol use and liver damage due to alcohol
