Clinical Interest
Triglycerides are a main component of the lipid profile, which also includes total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The lipid profile is a standard panel used to evaluate abnormal lipid levels that can lead to atherosclerosis and provides a comprehensive picture of lipid metabolism.
Elevated triglyceride levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, and atherosclerosis.
A triglyceride level of 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L) or higher is one of the criteria for diagnosing metabolic syndrome.
Severely elevated triglyceride levels (usually above 500 mg/dL or 5.6 mmol/L) are a risk factor for acute pancreatitis
Hypertriglyceridemia (high triglyceride levels) requires ongoing monitoring to assess the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions
Clinical Information Required
Fasting_patient
Patient Collection Note
In the absence of known hypertriglyceridaemia, a lipid profile may be taken in non-fasting patients. If hypertriglyceridaemia is discovered, a control sample should be prescribed and taken after a 12-hour fast. In all cases, the patient may drink water.
