Clinical Interest
A substance produced by the breakdown of nucleic acids in cells (genetic material) and eliminated by the kidneys in the urine. Elevated uric acid levels may be associated with gout or the development of kidney stones. Uric acid measurement is also used to monitor kidney disease.
Hyperuricemia can be associated with several conditions and requires evaluation to determine the underlying cause:
- Metabolic Syndrome: Elevated uric acid levels are often associated with metabolic syndrome, which includes conditions like hypertension, insulin resistance, and obesity.
- Diabetes Mellitus: Hyperuricemia is frequently seen in patients with type 2 diabetes.
- Cardiovascular Disease: High uric acid levels are considered a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and stroke.
Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can lead to tumor lysis syndrome, where rapid cell turnover increases uric acid levels.
Elevated uric acid levels can serve as an early biomarker for preeclampsia before the onset of other clinical symptoms.
