Clinical Interest

Urine Calcium measurement measures the amount of calcium excreted in the urine.

It helps to differentiate hyperparathyroidism from other causes of hypercalcaemia, such as familial hypocalcaemic hypercalcaemia (FHH), where blood calcium levels are high, but urinary calcium levels are low.

Conditions such as Osteoporosis and Paget's disease can be linked to disorders in calcium metabolism, as calcium loss through the urine can be high. Osteoporosis supplements can lead to hypercalciuria, increasing the risk of kidney stones or soft tissue calcification.
