Clinical Interest
The presence of glucose in the urine, known as glycosuria, is abnormal. The main clinical benefit of a urine glucose test is to detect diabetes mellitus or to assess poorly controlled diabetes.
In people with diabetes, high blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia) can lead to glucose being passed into the urine, as the kidneys are unable to reabsorb all the glucose when blood levels exceed a certain threshold (renal threshold). Random measurement of glucose in the urine can provide a rapid, albeit indirect, indication of blood glucose levels.
