Clinical Interest
Uric Acid is a waste product of the breakdown of purines, substances found in certain foods and produced naturally by the body. High levels of uric acid can lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints, causing gout, a form of arthritis characterised by sudden, intense pain and swelling.
Uric acid can form crystals that can lead to the formation of uric acid stones in the kidneys or urinary tract.
Determining uric acid excretion makes it possible to identify the cause of kidney stones and guide treatment to prevent recurrence, for example, by modifying the diet or taking medication such as allopurinol.
Urine uric acid measurement can determine whether hyperuricaemia is due to excessive production or a defect in renal excretion, which helps with diagnosis and treatment.
